This weekend I had the opportunity to enjoy several new restaurants with friends. Sunday morning, after getting dressed, everyone was ready for a nice brunch. I knew of “Orange”:www.orangebrunch.com, but unfortunately the wait time for 7 people would have been 1.5 hours. After quickly researching online, I found “Sola”:http://www.sola-restaurant.com, where I setup a reservation at 1:30PM.
Locating near Lincoln Square, “sola”:http://www.sola-restaurant.com “features contemporary American cuisine piqued with Asian and Hawaiian flavors.” From the color coordinated furniture and walls, to the IKEA silverware and stylish plates, the restaurant invested time decorating. Too much time perhaps.
While the ambience was perfect for brunch, I found the food and organization slightly lacking . Claiming to be one of the only restaurants in Chicago to serve real hash browns, I was dismayed when they came out overcooked and mushy. I also found their hawacamole (guacamole with an essence of mango) to have too much lime and barely any mango. The saving grace was the breakfast wrap, which came served on a plate decorated with guacamole and sour cream. Again the presentation of the dish was awe inspiring, and this time the dish lived up to its presentation. A spinach tortilla filled with black beans and eggs, the wrap definitely hit the spot.
Other dishes ordered around the table, looked equally delicious, and the reviews around the table were positive. The favorite dish at the table was eggs benedict.
I deducted points on organization, since we found ourselves waiting well past 45 minutes for our food. Our waitress kindly informed us that the delay was due to a private party upstairs. They graciously provided us a free plate of donuts (polynesian style). Although late in the game, they did help -wet- whet our appetite for our dishes.
At the end of the day, it’s a great place to take friends for a pleasant afternoon brunch. I love the ambience and service. By avoiding a few dishes, you are sure to have a great time.
